Guilt makes people do strange things. Torn by her sense of loyalty to Bryan and her budding feelings for Cyrus, she fastened the necklace around her neck and tucked it away under her blouse. |

Back on the highway, Kyna informed Cyrus that she wanted to make a brief stopover at the international shopping and ski resort at Banff. On the way, she took a detour through an animal preserve on the outskirts of the town, blowing a whole roll of film on a herd of lethargic buffalo and a few mangy elk. Afterward, she drove into town and found a parking place two blocks from the main shopping district. |

The morning that had started out so gloomy had turned into a glorious day. The sun was hot, yet not so hot as to chase the autumn chill from the air. The streets were packed with a veritable United Nations of shoppers: Germans, Japanese, Spaniards, French nuns and of course the ubiquitous ugly Americans. |

Cyrus took Kyna to lunch at a "New York" style diner just off the main avenue and listened patiently as she babbled about her photographic coup at the buffalo farm. While he wolfed down a real old-fashioned hamburgerlots of grease, tons of cholesterol and very rareKyna, who Cyrus now believed consumed more green things than any herbivore on the planet, had the house salad with ranch dressing on the side. |

"Yuck!" Kyna muttered when she saw the bloody juice dripping from his burger. "You think maybe they should run the match under that thing a few more times?" |

He cast a wary eye at her lettuce. "You should talk. You don't eat, you graze." |

During lunch Kyna reached across the table and took Cyrus's hand and asked if he minded doing a little souvenir hunting. |
